On the evil “scholars” who have made a mockery of Islam.
This letter was written more than 400 years ago. One can imagine the situation in our times.
Please look around you at “scholars” who write pretty articles twisting Islamic knowledge by their mascara pens in “academic journals” and sell religious “learning” and “experiences” for mighty chunks of dollars.
We are not concerned with the ahl al-bid’ah (wahhabis and shias), but please look around you at all those charlatans who claim to be “Ahl As-Sunnah”, “Ash’aris”, “Maturidis”, people of “one of the 4 esteemed madhhabs” and people of “tasawwuf” and “seekers of guidance” and people of “tariiqah” and so on.
Their forked tongues on the one hand sing the Burdah and praise the esteemed Sunni awliyaa, and on the other hand seek to equate Islam and kufr like christianity, judaism, budhhism etc. and sing hymns praising their kafir masters. These people have only 2 aims: to extract money out of the “Islamic” industry, and to serve the interests of their kafir masters.
Such people need to repent publicly and seek to work for the uplifting of Islam.
May Allah disgrace in this world and in the hereafter the faces of those who sell His deen for paltry sums of dollars in subservience to the kuffaar.
TRANSLATION OF LETTER 33 STARTS ———————————————————-
On the condemnation of the scholars of evil (‘ulamaa as-soo) who are engrossed in the love of this world and have made [religious] knowledge a means of acquiring duniya (i.e., this world and all its luxuries); and the praise and lauding of pious scholars who have become bereft of the love of this world – written towards Mullah Haji Muhammad Lahori.
Love of the duniya and attraction towards it is an ugly scar on the face for the group of scholars. Even though [Allah’s] creation may benefit due to them, their knowledge is of no use to their own selves. Even though the Shari’ah may be helped and the [Islamic] nation’s strengthening is aided and exaggerated by them, it is well possible that sometimes this help and strengthening is effected by people of sinfulness and indecency, as the Master of Messengers, ‘alaihi wa ‘alaihim wa ‘ala aalihis salawaatu wat tasleemaat, has informed regarding the help through a faajir (sinful person):
ان الله ليؤيد هذا الدين بالرجل الفاجر
Translation of meaning: Indeed Allah also uses a sinful person to help this religion. [Hadith, Shaykhaan – Bukhariy & Muslim]
The scholars of evil are like the philosopher’s stone, that transform iron or copper and other metals to gold if brought into contact with it, but it always stays a stone and doesn’t transform. Similarly, the fire (i.e., energy) that is concealed in stones and bamboo, the world benefits from them, but that unfortunate stone and bamboo do not benefit from the fire concealed within them. In fact, I say that this knowledge is actually harmful to them, as it has established evidence against them.
ان اشد الناس عذابا يوم القيامة عالم لم ينفعه الله بعلمه
Translation of meaning: The maximum ‘adhab on the Day of Judgment shall be on the person whom Allah has not benefitted by his knowledge. [Hadith, Tabarani, Bayhaqi, others]
Why shouldn’t their knowledge be harmful and hurtful to them? Even though that knowledge is incarnate respect and the most honorable of objects in existence in front of Allah. They have used that [knowledge] as a means and a path to earn the vile duniya (i.e., the benefits of its life) and property, status and nobility; while the duniya is the most disgraced & dishonored object in front of Allah and the worst of all creations. Then it is extremely disgusting to debase that which is honored in front of Allah and honor that which is deplorable in front of Allah; and in reality, is competition against Haqq Subhanahu wa Ta’aala.
Learning, teaching, and issuing fataawa is beneficial only when done purely for seeking Allah’s rida, and is bereft of the desires for status & nobility, acquisition of wealth & riches, and lofty ranks. And the sign and indicator of that is one acquire zuhd (renunciation) against the objects of this world and stay unattached to duniya and all that is in it.
Those ‘ulamaa (scholars) who are afflicted with this evil and are imprisoned in the love of this vile duniya, are the ‘ulamaa of duniya. These very people, the ‘ulamaa as-soo (scholars of evil), are THE worst of all people and are the embezzlers of deen, even though such people consider themselves as the [perfect] followers of religion [Islam] and the best of all creation:
وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْكَاذِبُونَ
اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَأَنسَاهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ أُوْلَئِكَ حِزْبُ الشَّيْطَانِ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ الشَّيْطَانِ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ
Translation of meaning: And they think they have done something, verily, they are liars. They have been consumed by satan and they have forgotten the remembrance of Allah; they are the party of satan, indeed, the party of satan is the one in loss. [Holy Quran 58:18-19]
One person from the greats [of the ummah] saw that lucifer is sitting unemployed and unworried about misguiding and wooing hearts to evil. That ascetic enquired the secret for this [buoyancy] from the accursed, and satan replied that the ‘ulamaa as-soo are providing him magnanimous help and support in this task of his, and they have disburdened him of this task [of misguiding people].
The truth of the matter is that all laziness & ineptitude that has been effected in the [following of] the commands of the Shari’ah, and every heedlessness that has been conceived in the externalization of deen and the [Islamic] nation – it has all been due to the balefulness of the ‘ulamaa as-soo and due to the putridity of their intentions.
Yes, those ‘ulamaa who are unconcerned of the duniya and liberated of the love of status, estate and wealth, they alone are the ‘ulamaa al-aakhirah (the scholars of the hereafter, i.e., scholars who seek to rectify their own and others’ hereafter) and the inheritors of the prophets, ‘alaihimus ssalawaat wat tasleemaat. Only these people are [considered as] admirable creation. Tomorrow, on the day of judgment, their inks shall be weighed in comparison to the weights of the bloods of those who are martyred [in the battleground] in the cause of Allah; and the scales containing their inks shall tip to their favor; and
نوم العلماء عبادة
[Translated to] “the sleep of scholars is [also] worship”
is also stated in their honor. These are the [honorable] scholars in whose eyes the beauty of the aakhirah (hereafter) glitters adorably. They have already witnessed the ugliness and the evil of duniya. They have seen the aakhirah as a view of baqaa (lastingness) and have found the duniya to be disfigured with downfall and annihilation. That is why they have given themselves away to the hereafter that shall be everlasting and have sundered themselves from the terminal world. The witnessing of the exaltedness of the aakhirah is the fruit and the result of witnessing the glory of the Eternal Creator (i.e., gaining a true COMPREHENSION of the knowledge of Him and His promises) and considering the duniya and everything in it as debased and deplorable is due to the ecstasy of witnessing the exaltedness of the aakhirah.
لان الدنيا و الاخرة ضرتان ان رضيت احداهما سخطت الاخرى
[Translated to]: Because the duniya and the aakhirah are like two wives [of the same man]; if one is pleased, the other gets displeased [out of women’s inherent jealousy for their husbands].

If the duniya is esteemed, then the aakhirah is disgraced; and if the aakhirah is cherished, then the duniya is snubbed. These two being gathered together is from the fallacies of two opposites being gathered together.
ما احسن الدين و الدنيا لو اجتمعا
[Translated to]: How good would it be if deen and duniya would gather together!
However, yes, a group from amongst the esteemed mashayekh, who have risen above themselves and their desires, due to some Haqqaaniy intentions (i.e., intentions of seeking Haqq Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), have donned the garb of the ahl ad-duniya (i.e., duniya seekers) and their outwardly manifestations appear bent towards the duniya; but in reality, they have no connection with it and they are bereft of it and completely liberated [of duniya].
رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
Translation of meaning: Men who are not left heedless – by trades, nor by selling – of the remembrance of Allah. [Holy Quran 24:37]
Trade transactions and selling and evils [of the world] are not deterrents to the remembrance of the truth for them. Even after being profusely connected to the affairs of duniya, they are disconnected to it.
Esteemed Khawaja Naqshband, qaddas Allahu Ta’ala sirrahul aqdas, has stated that he has seen in the market of Mina (on Hajj) a trader, who was conducting a trade worth 50,000 dinars, give or take, but his heart was not void of the remembrance of Haqq [Subhanahu wa Ta’ala] for even a second.
