Verse 16:125 & rulings pertaining to respecting kafirs

As-Salamu ‘Alaikum.

Ruling in verse 16:125 abrogated for kafirs; extant on Muslims

The munaafiqiin who pretend to be scholars of Islam, and play with the verses of the Quran, often quote this verse to justify their respect and honor for kufr and kuffaar.

ادْعُ إِلِى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ

Translation of meaning: Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and debate with them in a manner that is the best (i.e., most optimum, presenting the irrefutable arguments)*; indeed, your Lord knows best who from amongst them are strayed from His path, and He knows best who amongst them are guided. [Holy Quran 16:125]

* This verse also establishes evidence for the validity of the science of kalam by the Ahlus Sunah, the Ash’aris and Maturidis, using proofs that appeal to the sound mind.

Imam Qurtubi has ONLY THIS MUCH to say in his encyclopedic Jaami’ Al-Ahkam Al-Quran, under this verse:

فيه مسألة واحدة- هذه الآية نزلت بمكة في وقت الأمر بمهادنة قريش ، وأمره أن يدعو إلى دين الله وشرعه بتلطف ولين دون مخاشنة وتعنيف ، وهكذا ينبغي أن يوعظ المسلمون إلى يوم القيامة. فهي محكمة في جهة العصاة من الموحدين ، ومنسوخة بالقتال في حق الكافرين. وقد قيل : إن من أمكنت معه هذه الأحوال من الكفار ورجي إيمانه بها دون قتال فهي فيه محكمة. والله أعلم

In it, there is [just] one matter: This verse was revealed in Makkah, at the time of enacting a treaty with the [kuffaar of the] Quraysh, and it instructs him [the beloved Prophet] to call towards Allah’s religion and commands by grace and gentleness as opposed to through invective and condemnation, and that’s how it [the ruling] stays in regards to Muslims, until the day of judgment, for it is absolute in regards to [rectifying the mistakes of] disobedient muwahhidiin [i.e., Muslims]; and it is abrogated by the command for war in regards to the kafiriin. And it is [also] said: The verse will also apply absolutely [ONLY] in the case those kafirs about whose acceptance of Islam there is a [good] possibility of it without war*. And Allah knows best.

* i.e., if a kafir is well-behaved to Muslims and he is appreciative, receptive and welcoming to Islam, he should be treated in the rightful manner, so that he embraces Islam realizing that it will save him from everlasting hellfire, and if and when he does become Muslim, he deserves the full honor and dignity and warmth that we should show our brothers and sisters in Islam. It should also be noted that the verses of gentle treatment of kafirs ONLY apply to dhimmis and not to the harbiy kafirs of our times. This is a point of usul that the kafirs pretending to be scholars of Islam will NEVER elaborate on, because they are happy with the muharibiin seeking to destroy Islam, either through active combat, or through preaching and propagating their filthy ideologies.

The verses of war and jizyah are plentiful, but this muhkam (clear & decisive) and NON-ABROGATED verse, revealed later, in Surah Taubah, presents the other side of the picture, and this is the muhkam side that stands till the day of judgment.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ

Translation of meaning: O Messenger, wage jihad against the kuffaar and hypocrites and be harsh with them, and their abode is hell, a lowly refuge indeed. [Holy Quran 9:73 & 66:9]

Suffice it to say, that one of the greatest reformers of Islam and its tasawwuf, Imam Ghazzali ruled it necessary to even be harsh to those who call to bid’ah, as did the other great reformer of Islam and its tasawwuf, Imam Rabbani Shaykh Ahmad Farooqi Sirhindi, radzi Allahu ‘anhuma. Who is doing “da’wah” to who at interfaith tea parties?

EVEN IF, we were to roll with their fallacy and assume that the ruling of the verse even extends UNRESERVEDLY to ALL people, Muslims and filthy kafirs, and that the Makkan command is extant:

1 – STILL, mujtahid scholars describe {wisdom and beautiful calling} as the Quran and irrefutable arguments and sound, irrefutable proofs that REFUTE & NEGATE KUFR AND PROVE ISLAM.

2 – STILL, preaching gently is NOT compromising Islam and agreeing with kufr or respecting or honoring kufr.

3 – STILL, preaching gently is not saying that kafirs doomed to everlasting hellfire in the Quran, like christians, jews, sabians are “believers” and saved from everlasting hellfire.

4 – STILL, preaching gently is not trying to justify and praise the absolute paganism that is budhhism or hinduism or address kafirs like the dalai lama and the enemy of Islam, the filthy animal, the pope as “his holiness”

5 – STILL, PREACHING gently is not ASKING the kuffar to pray for oneself. 

6 – It is STILL DESTROYING & NEGATING KUFR, and telling the kuffar that their religions belong in the bins. It is telling the christians directly,

فَآمِنُواْ بِاللّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَلاَ تَقُولُواْ ثَلاَثَةٌ انتَهُواْ خَيْرًا لَّكُمْ

Translation of meaning: So believe in Allah and His Messengers and DO NOT say “three”, desist, it is better for you! [Holy Quran 4:171]

It is telling the hindus and budhhists bluntly that idol worshiping is not the work of sane human beings, as the Quran teaches.

It is telling the obstinate jews harshly, that there is NO implementation of the Torah UNLESS they accept the prophethood of our Master Rasulullah ﷺ as he and Moses and Abraham, ‘alaihimus salam, are brothers in prophethood who brought the same message. It is NOT accepting awards from them and praising their religion, shamelessly turning a blind eye to the plight of our brothers & sisters in Palestine.

These shayatiin want to follow the Makkan example? Have they not seen the Prophet’s persistence and suffering at Taif? Despite the worst hardships inflicted by mankind on any prophet, he stuck to the message of NEGATING & DESTROYING KUFR, EVEN WHEN HE WAS SHOWING GENTLENESS.

So where do these shayatiin present such proofs to destroy kufr and establish that Islam ALONE is what is provable and discernable to the sound mind?

Where are their references from the Quran in the faces of kafirs that decisively state that kufr and shirk are idiocies and that THE ONLY religion acceptable to Allah is ISLAM?

They claim to be Ash’aris & Maturidis defending the science of kalam – yet where are their debates with christians destroying the filthy trinity on the basis of kalam?

Where are their refutations of judaism and its rubbish arguments against the prophethood of our Master Rasulullah on the basis of sound arguments based on the arguments of the Ahlus Sunnah?

Not that one actually needs to ‘refute’ the garbage of worshiping elephant headed monkeys of the hindus or the abject idiocy of budhhism, but where are their refutations for these things?

On the contrary, we see these shayatiin trying to establish parallels between Islam and filth like christianity, hinduism, judaism, budhhism etc., trying to somehow give a message that their religions too are truthful or are acceptable to Allah, honoring human scum like the filthy benedict, or giving the message that Islam respects retarded kufr like worshiping humans or elephant headed monkeys, or praising their filthy religions as something beautiful, magnificent and exotic. They say things like “both these great religions” in regards to Islam and christianity or Islam and budhhism at “inter-faith” tea-parties and so on. Yal’anahumUllahu wa yal’anuhumul la’inoon.

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ وَإِن يَقُولُوا تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ هُمُ الْعَدُوُّ فَاحْذَرْهُمْ قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ

Translation of meaning: And when you look at them (munaafiqiin), you find their bodies handsome, and when they speak, you would listen [due to their treacherous eloquence]; as if they are timber logs lined up [against, a support, that is, their words are hollow and devoid of an iota of faith, and neither any comprehension of their fate in the hereafter]; they consider every shout against themselves [due to their guilty conscience]; they are the enemies, so be careful of them! Allah destroy them! How patently dissident they are [despite seeing irrefutable and obvious proofs]. [Holy Quran 63:4]

NAY! They are NOT preaching Islam “gently”. They are zanaadiq dogs, pretending to be scholars of Islam, panting and lolling their tongues out in front of their kafir masters*.

They are playing with the verses of Allah’s book for worldly gains. They are GETTING PREACHED by kafirs and donning the cloaks of scholarship, AND they are also asking other Muslims to be preached by kafirs in the name of kindness and gentleness.

* I know the fake sufis who love to play the adab card, will like to pick on my adab for calling such people as similar to dogs. The example of shayatiin of the humans and the jinn, who play with Allah’s religion, is that of a dog and from the adab taught in the Quran!

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَاهُ بِهَا وَلَـكِنَّهُ أَخْلَدَ إِلَى الأَرْضِ وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ فَمَثَلُهُ كَمَثَلِ الْكَلْبِ إِن تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ أَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَث ذَّلِكَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِآيَاتِنَا فَاقْصُصِ الْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Translation of meaning: If it was Our Will, We would have elevated his rank, but he was caught on the earth, and a follower of his caprice, so his state is like that of a dog, that if attacked, lolls his tongue out, and [also] if left alone, lolls his tongue out – such is the similitude of the people who reject Our Signs, so you narrate the matter so that they perchance ponder. [Holy Quran 7:176]

Wishing kafirs a merry christmas, addressing absolute scoundrels such as christian popes, la’anahumullah, as “his holiness” and teresa as “mother”, accepting awards from jews, not once batting an eyelid at the state of their brethren in Palestine and the fact that these people have occupied our first Qiblah, and the list of their acceptance of such kufr and kuffaar, blatantly showing their hypocrisy, is endless.

Here are a few rulings that might perchance ignite some shame into these people who claim they ‘call people to Islam with gentleness [by forging alliances and praising and glorifying kufr like christianity, budhhism, judaism, etc]’

See these from the Quran, hadiith and words of scholars on the following topics:

1 – If a person says, “If I can’t add ‘rahmatullahi ‘alaih’ after [kafir]’s name, I’m in the wrong religion”, this is compound apostasy and this person has left Islam. Saying “I’m in the wrong religion” after objecting that he can’t pray for/respect a kafir, is abject disrespect to Islam and absolute kufr. In regards to the prayer part: 

الدعاء بالمغفرة للکافر کفر لطلبه تکذیب اﷲ تعالٰی فیما اخبربه

حلیه المحلی شرح منیة المصلی

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: Praying for the forgiveness of a kafir is kufr, as this is seeking the belying of what Allah Ta’ala has conveyed. (Hilyah)

مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُواْ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُواْ أُوْلِي قُرْبَى مِن بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ

Translation of meaning: It is NOT for the Prophet, neither for the believers, that they pray for the forgiveness of the mushrikiin, even if they are their kin, after it has been made known to them that they [the mushrikiin] are dwellers of hellfire [i.e., their having died in a state of shirk]. [Holy Quran 9:113]

ان ماتوا فلا تشهدوھم

سنن ابن ماجه

 Translation of meaning: If they [kuffar] die, do not attend their funeral. (Hadith, Ibn Majah)


کنز العمال

Translation of meaning: And do not pray upon them [kafirs]. (Hadith, Kanz Ul-‘Ummal)

2 – On those who like to add “his holiness” before the filthy kafir benedict or the dalai lama’s name, or those who like to call the filthy nun teresa as “mother”:

تبجیل الکافر کفر

درالمختار    کتاب الحظر و الاباحة فصل فی البیع    251/2

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: Honor of a kafir is kufr. (Durr Al-Mukhtar)

لوسلم علی الذمی تبجیلا یکفر لان تبجیل الکافر کفر اوقال لمجوسی یااستاذ تبجیلا کفر

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: If a [Muslim] person offers salam to a dhimmi (a kafir who pays jizyah to the Muslim state) as a mark of honor, he becomes a kafir; or if he calls a fire-worshiper (majoosi) “hey, sir” to honor him, he has become a kafir. (Durr Al-Mukhtar)

Those shameless people who address the filthy missionary of kufr, teresa as “mother”, should note this verse of the Quran:

النَّبِيُّ أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ

Translation of meaning: The Prophet has more rights on the believers than their own selves and his wives are their mothers* [Holy Quran 33:6]

* in matters of being forbidden to be married by anyone else ever and being honored and respected more than their own mothers, but in rules of hijab, inheritence etc., they come under the jurisdiction that is applied on all regular believers.

Even the dhimmi women are not equal to our Muslim sisters, so much so that the fuqahaa have stated:

والذمیة کالرجل الاجنبی فی الاصح فلاتنظر الی بدن المسلمة

درالمختار شرح تنویرالابصار        کتاب الحظروالاباحة     242/2

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: The dhimmiyah, in the authoritative ruling, is similar to strange men [for hijab rules], and she is not allowed to see the body of a Muslimah. (Durr Al-Mukhtar)

It should be noted that this rule is common to ALL FOUR MADHHABS of the Ahlus Sunnah. Such is the dignity and pride of our Muslim sisters. 

3 – A person who refers to Islam and filthy, ugly christianity/budhhism/etc. as “these two great religions” equating them as both equally praiseworthy, is an apostate from Islam, as is the one who makes such idiotic remarks as “we need gandhism/gandhi’s hinduism” or “we need the budhhism of dalai lama” or “we need the christianity of the pope” and so on

من حسن کلام اھل الاھواء وقال معنوی او کلام له معنی صحیح ان کان ذلک کفرا من القائل کفر المحسن

بحرالرائق   باب احکام المرتدین 124/5

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: Whoever praises the sayings of heretics or says that their words are meaningful or have correct meanings, if the saying [of the heretics] was kufr, then the one who praised them has become kafir. (Bahr Ar-Raaiq)

الرضا بالکفر کفر

منح الروض الازھر شرح الفقه الاکبر     فصل فی الکفر صریحاً وکنایة  – 177

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: Being pleased with kufr, is kufr in itself. (Mineh Al-Rawdz Al-Azhar Sharh Fiqh Al-Akbar)

4 – Those who like to visit churches and synagogues just for the purpose of sightseeing, should note this ruling by the fuqahaa of the Ahlus Sunnah regarding Muslims entering churches and temples, or praying (salah) inside them for any reason:

فی التتارخانیة یکرہ للمسلم الدخول فی البیعة والکنیسة حیث انه مجمع الشیاطین قال فی البحر الظاھر انها تحریمة لانها المرادة عند اطلاقهم . فاذا  حرم الدخول فالصلٰوة اولی

ردالمحتار   کتاب الصلٰوة  254/1

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: It states in the [Fatawa] Tatarkhaniyah that it is [prohibitively] disliked for Muslims to enter the synagogues and churches, as they are the places of gatherings of satans. It states in Bahr [Ar-Raiq, an encyclopedic fiqh primer] that the implication [of dislike] here is that of prohibition as at the time of [such] decisive applications, this is the implication; then if just entry is forbidden, prayer is more primarily [forbidden]. (Radd Al-Muhtaar of Imam Ibn ‘Abidin)

What can we say about those who gleefully visit such houses of devils in order to please their kafir masters, or hold joint prayer sessions with them?

5 – Those who like to pay their regards to christians and jews for christmas and easter and hanukkah to please them should note this ruling mentioned above, just in regards to a simple greeting, and should note that this is for dhimmis, the kafirs of our times being harbiys:

لوسلم علی الذمی تبجیلا یکفر لان تبجیل الکافر کفر اوقال لمجوسی یااستاذ تبجیلا کفر

درالمختار شرح تنویر الابصار   کتاب الحظروالاباحة 251/2

[Fuqahaa’s ruling]: If a [Muslim] person offers salam to a dhimmi (a kafir who pays jizyah to the Muslim state) as a mark of honor, he becomes a kafir; or if he calls a fire-worshiper (majoosi) “hey, sir” to honor him, he has become a kafir. (Durr Al-Mukhtar)

Those who say that it is courtesy and we too would like them to greet us for Ramadzan, ‘Eid Al-Fitr, ‘Eid Al-Adzha and so on or just for courtesy sake, are severely mistaken, because we do not gain respect by the kuffar. A Muslim’s respect is granted by Allah. In fact, respect from a kafir is nothing but a sign that one should seriously worry about his state with Allah.

We do not have to be weak. There is nothing rude about minding our own business. Our interactions with kafirs in matters like work, buying, selling etc. are in any case only meant to be professional. Perhaps these people should learn a thing from atheists who step their foot down, and make it known that they find it offensive and do not wish to be greeted for christmas. These precautions must be ESPECIALLY taken in times such as ours, when Islam is being weakened and attacked from all sides. 

Even converts can gently tell their kafir family members that our religion forbids us from greeting people on festivities of kufr or participating in gatherings or worse yet religious services, for such festivities, if they (the family) are not hostile to their Islam. If they are hostile to their Islam, they should be dealt with harshly too. There is no compromise on faith. 

The impermissibility to befriend kafirs has already been mentioned on multiple posts on this blog. One should note that the very least effect of friendship is that one cares not to upset his friend, and in the case of kafirs, this will greatly diminish one’s ability to uplift Islam and insult kufr if he is friends with a kafir.

Also if someone is worried about the effects shunning of friendships or pleasantries to kafirs will have on their business, social status, prestige, etc., they should have faith that good and bad fate is from Allah, and see the below verses and ahadiith:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَتَّخِذُواْ آبَاءكُمْ وَإِخْوَانَكُمْ أَوْلِيَاء إَنِ اسْتَحَبُّواْ الْكُفْرَ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ

Translation of meaning: O you who believe, do not consider your fathers and brothers as friends, if they love kufr over faith [i.e., Islam], and whoever amongst you bears affinities to them, he is the same transgressor. [Holy Quran 9:23]

قُلْ إِن كَانَ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَانُكُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَالٌ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَجِهَادٍ فِي سَبِيلِهِ فَتَرَبَّصُواْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ اللّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ وَاللّهُ لاَ يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ

Translation of meaning: Say, “If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your clansmen, and your wealth you earned, and those trades wherein you fear losses and those dwellings pleasing to you – are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and jihad in His cause, then watch out until Allah implements His command, and Allah guides not the open sinners. [Holy Quran 9:24]

وَإِمَّا يُنسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَلاَ تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ

Translation of meaning: And if satan causes you to forget, then do not sit with the transgressors after you remember. (Holy Quran 6:68)

فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن كَذَبَ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِالصِّدْقِ إِذْ جَاءهُ أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِّلْكَافِرِينَ

Translation of meaning: Who is a greater transgressor than the one who lies against Allah, and belies the truth when it comes to him; is not hellfire the abode of kafirs? [Holy Quran 39:32]

من جامع المشرک وسکن معه فانه مثله

سنن ابی داؤد

[Translation of meaning]: He who gathers with a mushrik and stays with him, will become like him. (Hadith, Abu Dawood)

انا برئ من کل مسلم مع مشرک لاترٰی نارا ھما

سنن ابی داؤد

[Translation of meaning]: I am alienated from any Muslim who is with a mushrik, their fires should not see each other [i.e., Muslims should stay aloof from mushrikiin.] (Hadith, Abu Dawood)

لا تُصَاحِبْ إِلا مُؤْمِنًا وَلا يَأْكُلْ طَعَامَكَ إِلا تَقِيٌّ

سنن ابی داؤد, مسنداحمد بن حنبل

[Translation of meaning]: Do not befriend BUT a believer, and your food mustn’t be eaten except by the pious. (Hadith, Abu Dawuud, Musnad Ahmad)

انما مثل الجلیس الصالح وجلیس السوء کحامل المسک ونافخ الکیر فحامل المسک اما ان یحذیک واما ان تبتاع منه واما ان تجد منه ریحا طیبة ونافخ الکیر اما ان یحرق ثیابک اما ان تجد منه ریحا خبیثة

صحیح البخاری, صحیح مسلم

[Translation of meaning]: The similtude of the good companion and the evil companion is such that one carries musk, and the other is working the furnace. The carrier of the musk will either give it to you as is, or you will buy it from him, and if nothing else, at least you will pick up a good perfume on your person; while with the other one, he will either burn your clothes, or in the very least, you will pick up a stink from him. (Hadith, Bukhari & Muslim)

مثل جلیس السوء کمثل صاحب الکیر ان لم یصبک من سوادہ اصابک من دخانه

سنن ابی داؤد

[Translation of meaning]: The company of the evil is akin to being in the presence of an iron-smith’s furnace, even if the soot doesn’t harm you, the smoke will. (Hadith, Abu Dawood)

ایاک وقرین السوء فانک به تعرف

تهذیب تاریخ ابن عساکر

[Translation of meaning]: Beware of an evil friend for you shall be known as he is. (Hadith, Tahdhib Tariikh Ibn ‘Asakir)

اعتبروا الصاحب بالصاحب


[Translation of meaning]: Know a man according to his friend. (Hadith, Kanz Al-‘Ummal)

 لا تُجَالِسُوا أَهْلَ الْقَدَرِ , وَلا تُفَاتِحُوهُمْ

سنن ابی داؤد, سنن امام احمد بن حنبل

[Translation of meaning]: Do not sit with the deniers of fate, and do not be welcoming to them. (Hadith, Sunan Abu Dawuud, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal)
