Verses 5:68-69 – Setting the record straight some more on jews and christians

28 Aug

As-Salamu ‘Alaikum

In addition to verse 2:62, another verse that hypocrites love to quote and somehow twistedly prove that their christian and jewish brothers and sisters shall be saved in the hereafter, is verse 5:69.

Further to the last post regarding verse 2:62, it is best to follow it immediately by verse 5:69. Not only that, to expose the hypocrisy of these fake scholars, I have also included the immediately preceding verse 5:68 with its commentary too.

Once again, I have taken the simplest and most lucid tafsiir under this verse, that of Imam Ibn Kathiir, some of the other ones going into talks about hypocrites as well. As usual, no sahabi and no scholar of Islam has EVER quoted this or any verse and twisted the meanings so perversely so as to say that kafirs are not really kafirs. Only a hypocrite can do such a thing.

Here are the verses:

Translation of meaning: Say [dear Prophet], “O people of the book! you are on to NOTHING unless you establish the Torah and the Injil AND THAT WHICH HAS COME UNTO YOU FROM YOUR LORD” and that which has come to you [o beloved Prophet] from your Lord, increases many of them in stubborn rejection and disbelief, and don’t you [o beloved Prophet] grieve over [this] nation of kafirs. Verily, those who believe, and those who are jews, and the sabians, and the christians – whoever [from amongst them] believes in Allah and the last day, and does righteous deeds, then on them is no fear, nor shall they grieve. [Holy Quran 5:68-69]

The Almighty says: Say o [beloved Prophet] Muhammad, {O people of the book! you are on to NOTHING} that is, in religion {UNLESS you establish the Torah and the Injiil} that is: UNTIL you believe in EVERYTHING that you possess in your hands by way of the books sent by Allah to the prophets, and do as is mentioned in them – as the commands contained in them DO ORDER regarding the following of Muhammad, sal Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, and believing in what ever he is sent with, and adherence to his Shari’ah. And because of this Layth ibn Abi Sulaym said on account of Mujahid, in regards to His saying {AND THAT WHICH HAS COME UNTO YOU FROM YOUR LORD}, it means The Great Quran.

And His saying {and that which has come to you [o beloved Prophet] from your Lord, increases many of them in stubborn rejection and disbelief} is followed by its explanation {and don’t you [o beloved Prophet] grieve over [this] nation of kafirs} – that is: Don’t worry about them [o beloved Prophet] and it is from them [i.e., their own doing] that they are not guided to you.

Then He said: {Verily, those who believe} and they are the Muslims {and those who are jews} they are the carriers of the Torah {and the sabians}; after a lengthy section [detailing their, the ahl al-kitab’s miserable states] some upliftment and kindness is shown [i.e., they are told they can salvage their world and the hereafter if they embrace Islam] and the sabians, they are a people between the christians and magians, they do not have any religion. Mujahid has said on his account: between jews and magians. And Sa’eed bin Jubayr said: between jews and christians; and it is said on account of Hasan [and Hakam] that: they are like the magians. And Qatada said: They are a people who worship the angels, and pray facing other than the qiblah, and read the psalms. And Wahb bin Munabbih said: They are a people who acknowledge Allah as one but they do not believe in a Shari’ah that they act upon and no kufr [in regards to the previous prophets] was exhibited by them.

And Ibn Wahb said: Ibn Abu Zannad informed me, on his father’s account, he said: The sabians are a people who were a people inhabiting Iraq and they were in Koothaa, and they believed in all the prophets, and fasted every year 30 days, and prayed facing Yemen five times every day. And there are other sayings too.

And the christians are well-known, and they are the carriers of the Injiil.

The aim: Any one from these groups who believe in Allah and the last day and who does good deeds, he is promised a reward on the day of judgment, and this is not possible UNLESS & UNTIL he adheres to the Shari’atil Muhammadiyyah, after its owner [Prophet Muhammad, sal Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] has been sent to all mankind and jinnkind. Then who ever qualifies to this [that is affirming the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad, ‘alaihis salam, and accepting his Shari’ah and acting on it] {then on them is no fear} in what is to come [hereafter], nor regarding all that they left behind in this life, on it {nor shall they grieve}. And the details of this topic have been explained in Surah Baqarah with rich elucidations.

(Underlining by me)

Alhamdulillah, the brothers and sisters can see from the tafsiir of verse 5:69 that it is nothing but a glad tiding to jews, christians, etc. that as long as they’re alive, nothing is lost. They can salvage their world and the hereafter by embracing Islam, and attain everlasting bliss in paradise.

It does NOT in anyway show that they are at par to Muslims or believers in Allah or that they shall be saved in the hereafter.

In fact, the context from preceding verses such as 5:68 and the theme of the surah and the oncoming verses unleash the Quran’s fury at them that they are indeed kafirs and that if they die in such a state, they shall be doomed to everlasting hellfire and perdition.

May Allah further disgrace and humiliate the hypocrites who are trying to misinform and misguide innocent Muslims.
