Verse 1:7 – غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين – On “those upon whom is wrath and those who are astray”

20 Jan

The Quran says right in the very beginning in the Al-Fatihah –

1) that christians and jews are a damned people and

2) teaches us how to plead to Allah not to let us go astray like them

As-Salamu ‘Alaikum

I have no idea why this post was not made earlier. May Allah raise my levels of alertness and cognition. EVERY Muslim PLEADS to Allah AT LEAST 17 times a day to NOT make him similar to jews and christians, as he reads the Fatihah a bare minimum of 17 times a day in the rak’ats of the 5 daily fardz prayers.

This itself, the very first chapter of the Quran, is a tight slap on the face of those kafirs who propagate that the christians and jews are not considered kafirs in Islam.

The scholars of tafsiir are unanimous in stating that “maghdzoobi ‘alaihim” (upon whom is wrath) are the jews and the “adz-dzaalleen” (severely astray) are the christians.

The tafsiir of the Fatihah is extremely lengthy in most books of tafsiir. It is a short surah, but indeed, the secrets contained in it simply can’t be amassed by humanity and are fully known only to Allah, and scholars have done their best to expound on it as best as they have learnt from their seniors, may Allah reward their efforts.

In any case, without further ado…

الثانية والثلاثون- قوله تعالى : {غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا الضَّالِّينَ}

Thirty Two: The Almighty’s saying [Not of those who are under wrath neither those misguided]

There is a difference on who the “under wrath” are and who the “those misguided” are. For the MAJORITY, those under wrath are the jews and those misguided are the christians. And the same exegesis has been narrated from the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in a hadith by ‘Adiyy bin Hatim and the narration of his [conversion to] Islam. Abu Dawuud Al-Tialsi has narrated it in his Musnad and Tirmidhi in his Jami’. And also The Almighty’s following saying regarding the jews testifies to this tafsiir (exegesis) {and they returned with Allah’s wrath upon them 2:61 & 3:112} and He said {And Allah’s wrath is upon them 48:6} and He said regarding the christians {a people who have gone astray from before and misled many and they strayed miserably from the right path 5:77}. And [it is also] said: Those under wrath are the mushrikiin and those astray are the munaafiqiin.

Snippets from Imam Ibn Kathiir’s Tafsiir Al-Quran Al-‘Azdhiim

[Snippet from the lenghty tafsiir under the verse:] And it has been narrated from Ibn Marduyah, from the hadiith of [i.e., narrated by] Ibrahim bin Tahman, on the authority of Badeel bin Maysarah, on the authority of ‘Abdullah bin Shaqeeq, on the authority of Abi Dharr [and] he said: I asked RasulAllah about the “maghdzoobi ‘alaihim” (those upon whom is wrath) and he said: “The jews”; [and he, Abi Dharr, said] I said: “Adz-dzaalleen” (those astray)? He [Prophet ] said: “The christians”.

As-Suddi said narrating from Abi Malik, narrating from Abi Saleh, narrating from Ibn ‘Abbas, narrating from Murrah Al-Hamdani, narrating from Ibn Mas’uud, and narrated by plentiful companions of the Prophet   – “ghayril maghdzoobi ‘alaihim” (not those upon whom is wrath) – they’re the jews – “wala adz-dzaalleen” (nor those astray) – they’re the christians.

[Another snippet:] And Adz-Dzahhaak said, as did Ibn Jurayj, on account of Ibn ‘Abbas: “ghayril maghdzoobi ‘alaihim” (not those upon whom is wrath) – they’re the jews – “wala adz-dzaalleen” (nor those astray) – they’re the christians.

[Another snippet:] And likewise has been said by Rabii’ bin Anas, and ‘AbdAr-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam, and another one, and Ibn Abi Hatim said: “I don’t know of any difference between the mufassireen (exegetes) on this [matter of maghdzoobi ‘alaihim and adz-dzaalleen].”

[Another Snippet:] And the hadiith presented earlier is testimony to the sayings of these imams that the jews are the maghdzoobi ‘alaihim and the christians are the dzaalloon, and The Almighty’s saying addressing the children of Israel in Surah Al-Baqarah: {At what paltry sums they bought their lives that they denied that what Allah revealed, in the envy that Allah reveals His revelation on a slave that He Wills, hence they became deserving of wrath upon wrath, and for the kafirs is a humiliating torment. 2:90} and He said in Al-Maaidah {You say: Shall I tell who is worse than that in status in front of Allah – those whom Allah cursed and sent wrath upon, and made them into monkeys and pigs, and the abode of the worshipers of satan is worse, and they are much deviated from the right path. 5:60} and the Almighty said: {Cursed are those children of Israel who committed kufr on the tongues of Dawuud and ‘Eisa son of Maryam; this is the recompense for their disobedience and arrogance. Those who do not prevent one another from denials, indeed they do commit very bad deeds. 5:78,79}

[Another Snippet:] And it is narrated in seerah (biographies) on account of Zayd bin ‘Amru bin Nufayl: When he and a group of his friends set out for Syria in search of the true religion, the jews said to him, “You can’t enter our ranks until you accept in your fate, some of Allah’s punishment”; and he said, “I am [looking to] escaping from Allah’s punishment.” And the christians said to him, “You can’t enter our ranks until you accept in your fate, some of Allah’s damnation” and he said, “I can’t do it” and he stayed upon his innate state [denouncing all religions]; and he left the worshiping of idols and the religion of pagans, and neither did he enter either of the religions of the jews or the christians. However, his companions entered the christian religion, because they found it as almost the same as the religion of the jews, and from among them was Waraqah bin Nowfal – UNTIL Allah guided him with His Prophet when He sent him, and he (Waraqah) believed whatever was revealed in revelation, radzi Allahu ‘anhu.

Note: 1. As the reader can see, this narration is about the days before Rasulullah ﷺ announced his prophethood.

2. From this event, from the story of Zayd bin ‘Amru, we also learn a very important lesson: That although mankind cannot identify the canonical laws of religion by itself, the human mind is INDEED capable to discern that worshiping objects of the universe, like the sun and the moon and idols and other human beings, is wrong and stupid and the mind is INDEED able to understand that the universe has its Creator, Who is in no way similar to His Creation.

Indeed, we beg Allah to safeguard us from the ways of christians and jews and all other kafirs, including those filthy kafirs who call themselves “Muslims” but yet love to befriend christians and jews and praise their filthy religions and their filthy religious heads like the filthy pope!

And success is but by His granting.

Was-Salam.
