The Prophet ﷺ stood for Allah’s angels, not for dead infidels

14 May

Translation of meaning: It is reported on the authority of Anas bin Malik: A jew’s bier passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he stood; and [the companions] said: O Messenger of Allah [ﷺ], it is a jew’s bier. He [ﷺ] said: But I stood for the angels. (Al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahiihayn)

The above hadiith is Sahiih on the criteria of Imam Muslim and it clearly states that the Messenger of Allah stood in honor of Allah’s angels, not the dead infidels. This point is proven by many other ahadiith as well. For example:

Translation of meaning: He sal Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his companions stood for a bier and [people] said: O Messenger of Allah, it is a jewess. He [ﷺ] then said: Indeed death is a fright, then if you see a janaza, stand. (Sahiih Muslilm)

This hadiith exists in multiple hadiith collections including Sahiih Muslim. Yet the syncretists kafirs pretending to be Muslim scholars never quote it.

The syncretist kafirs pretending to be Ash’aris & Sufis narrate this below hadith with the wrong context to indicate that the Messenger of Allah honored jews and christians.

Translation of meaning: A bier passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he stood, and it was said to him that it is the bier of a jew. He replied: “Isn’t it a soul” (Sahiih Bukhari)

“Isn’t it a soul?” in the above mentioned hadiith only means that jew or not, it is still a dead human and in any case the angels will do whatever they are assigned to do – take souls out of bodies, deliver torment to dead infidels; and honor and blessings to dead Muslims. The hadiith is simply stating that it is still a dead person, and therefore death in itself as well as its accompanying angels need to be respected.

Furthermore, the act of standing for funerals, EVEN IN HONOR OF ANGELS, has been abrogated, as shown by the below hadiith.

Translation of meaning: It is narrated on the authority of ‘Ali (may Allah reward him), he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in the presence of a janaza until it was placed on ground and people too stood alongside him [following him ﷺ]; then afterwards he remained seated and commanded them [people] to stay seated. (Kanz al-‘Ummaal)

Sahiih Muslim has an entire chapter titled ‘Chapter on the abrogation of standing for a funeral’ in the ‘Book of Funerals’:

Translation of meaning: It is reported on the authority of Waaqid bin ‘Amr that he said: Naafi’ bin Jubayr saw me while we were standing for a bier (janaza) while he was seated, and waited for the bier to be placed on the ground; and he said to me, “what made you stand?”. I said “I was waiting for the bier to be placed on the ground [based on] what was narrated to me by Abu Sa’iid Al-Khudri. He [Naafi’] said: Indeed, Mas’uud bin Al-Hakm narrated to me on the authority of ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, wherein he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood [in the earlier times] and later he remained seated.” (Sahiih Muslim, Book of Funerals, Chapter on the abrogation of standing for a bier)

Imam An-Nawawiy says in his commentary on Sahiih Muslim:

[Imams of madhhabs] Malik and Abu Hanifa and Ash-Shafi’iy said: Standing [for passing biers] is abrogated.

The above abundantly establishes that the Prophet ﷺ NEVER stood in honor of a dead jew or any other infidel. He stood in honor of Allah’s angels and also to observe the seriousness of death itself, and this practice too has been abrogated.

    As Salamu Alaykum

The scholar I told you about uses this event to prove that it is permissible to go to the funeral of a non-muslim.

He also says that it is allowed to make dua for deceased kafir parents if they were not called to Islam properly.

      Waleykum Salam

      Will see the links later.

The fuqahaa of Islam have permitted attending the material part of a dhimmi kafir’s funeral. By ‘material part’, I mean the actual burial, and not the religious rituals like their mass, prayers, rituals of kufr etc. Even this is permitted in some circumstances for dhimmi kafirs like parents, or well-behaved neighbors.

It is haram and kufr by consensus to make dua for anyone who died kafir, based on explicit Quranic verse. The ‘called to Islam properly’ part is just a red herring on the part of the jahil ‘scholar’.

The Ash’ari & Maturidi scholars are unanimous in stating, based on sound proofs from Quran and ahadiith, that anyone who has heard the name of our Master RasulAllah ﷺ, and the creedal message of Islam – that there is no God other than Allah and our Master Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger – in any sequence of words – he is accountable to become Muslim and has NO EXCUSE to stay on kufr. Legally speaking, that is ALL that ‘being called to Islam properly’ entails.

In-sha-Allah, we will go into deeper examination of this topic in due time. Anything else is simply deliberate subterfuge. If he doesn’t explain what ‘being called properly’ entails, then he is deliberately misleading and misinforming people, and preparing his place in hellfire.

It is a terrible thing to misguide innocent Muslims only to please kafirs. A Muslim is worried about Allah’s Ridza.

In a previous reply to a comment by another brother, I explicitly posted the verse and the scholarly consensus on it:

According to Tafsiir Jalalayn, in tafsiir of verse 9:113, this ‘being made known to be dwellers of hellfire’ is due to a person’s dying a kafir. See below:

And it [the following verse] was revealed in relation to his, sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, istighfar (seeking forgiveness) for his uncle abu talib, and some sahaba’s seeking forgiveness for their kafir parents {It is NOT for the Prophet, neither for the believers, that they pray for the forgiveness of the mushrikiin, even if they are their kin,} i.e., close relations {after it has been made known to them that they are dwellers of hellfire} i.e., due to their dying kafirs. [Tafsiir Jalalayn]

Some perrenialists may use this portion of what you quoted:

    what is the jawab?

As mentioned in the original post itself, even if it isn’t abrogated, the standing of our Master ﷺ was for the angels and not the dead infidel, as he ﷺ has himself made it abundantly clear.

The correct saying is that standing for passing biers is an abrogated practice. wAllahu a’alam.
