As-Salamu ‘Alaikum

I suggest those of you who haven’t heard of him to please read the story of alfonse “scarface” capone?

He was a criminal mastermind in america during the 1920’s. He was involved in a whole host of crimes ranging from murder, money laundering, bribery, gambling, prostitution, extortion and liquor racketing. And yet the law couldn’t nab him on a single charge related to those crimes. What they eventually nailed him for was – tax evasion! He had endorsed just one check in his life, and it was this one check that ultimately cast the spell of his doom –> Read his story on this link – Click Here.

Some excerpts from the linked story:

“In 1927, he brought in an estimated $100 million”

“This is equal to about $1.2 billion in 2008 dollars”

“There’s no telling how many people died by his hand or his command. But when it came down to it, the federal prosecutors who worked for years to build a case against Scarface could only pin charges of tax evasion on the gangster.”

“He endorsed only one check in his lifetime, and he never had a bank account in his own name.”

“Eventually, they found enough to convict him. The check he endorsed, along with testimony from the very few witnesses the feds could persuade to testify, provided enough evidence to put Capone away.

He was ultimately found guilty of evasion for not paying taxes on his ill-gotten wealth.”

Our aim is not to eulogize a dead infidel and criminal, we will now get to the parallels of his evil and crimes inside the Islamic tradition now. 


WALAA & BARAA are the taxes on sincere Muslim FAITH & IDENTITY:

Evasion of these taxes is what will eventually get the munaafiqeen convicted!

Just as this “smart” criminal only eventually came to be nailed on issues of tax evasion, the munaafiqeen pretending to be “Muslim scholars”, and “Ash’ari” and “Maturidi” and “Sufi” can only be nailed on one charge – evasion of walaa (loyalty and affinity… to Islam and Muslims) and baraa (dissociation and shunning affinities… from kufr and kuffaar).

Just like the criminal we mentioned above, these munaafiqeen too work meticulously to cover their tracks, and many a time, a lot of Muslims simply can’t catch them out on their “subtle” and “nuanced” injections of kufr into the masses of innocent Muslims. These “subtle” and “nuanced” prescriptions of disbelief can be handed out in their live gatherings, articles, lectures, websites, audios, videos, etc., ranging on anything from topics relating to ‘aqiidah, fiqh, hadiith, tafsiir, tasawwuf, Islamic history, language, etc.

Only those specially trained in a particular discipline and know the primary and secondary sources covering the specific topic, will be able to catch them out, IF they actually come across the deviance, heresy, or kufr, administered by the munaafiq.

IF they don’t come across it, they will find no reason to understand the munaafiq as a munaafiq and will even go out of their way to defend him. This even applies to a scholar or student of knowledge who rightly considers it as his responsibility to have husn az-zdhann towards any Muslim.

The common folk will simply not have a clue about the munaafiq’s careful polluting of their Islam, even if they are witnesses to the “subtle” and “nuanced” heresies and kufr that the munaafiq has subjected them to, lest they have detailed knowledge on the specific topic which the munaafiq uses as his route to try and hijack their Islam – or are literate enough to be able to locate and read the primary and secondary sources of information on that topic, or having access to a scholar who can do it for them.

What everyone – scholar or common person alike – can nail the munaafiq on – is just like al capone’s case – tax evasion!

Just as zakat is an obligation to purify our wealth, walaa and baraa are taxes on the sincerity of our declaration of faith and our identity as Muslims.

A munaafiq, be it historical or modern, is ALWAYS guilty of evasion on walaa and baraa. Just like the only check that scarface simply couldn’t avoid endorsing in his life in order to launder his gambling proceeds, the munaafiq too simply can’t avoid leaving a track of his walaa and baraa!

The munaafiq is excellent at feigning walaa towards Muslims, as is obvious by definition, for if he declared open enmity to Islam and Muslims, he wouldn’t be a hypocrite, but rather an open enemy!

he is best know by his walaa to his kafir brothers and sisters, people from whom Muslims maintain baraa, and his agitation at anything that helps Islam or Muslims. The munaafiq will be irked greatly by any suggestion aimed at uplifting Islam. All the “suggestions” and “help” and “advices” he offers, are aimed at only one thing – to try and get Islam or Muslims subdued by his kafir brothers and sisters. The Quran says –

إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ قَالُوا نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَكَاذِبُونَ

اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ الْعَدُوُّ فَاحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ

 Translation of meaning: When the hypocrites appear before you, they say, ‘we testify you are Allah’s Messenger’; and Allah knows that you are His Messenger; and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

They rendered their oaths as shields so as to stop from Allah’s path; indeed they commit evil deeds.

This is because they declared faith by their tongues, then became kafirs by their hearts; so their hearts were sealed and now they understand nothing.

And when you look at them (munaafiqiin), you find their bodies handsome, and when they speak, you would listen [due to their treacherous eloquence]; as if they are timber logs lined up [against, a support, that is, their words are hollow and devoid of an iota of faith, and neither any comprehension of their fate in the hereafter]; they consider every shout against themselves [due to their guilty conscience]; they are the enemies, so be careful of them! Allah destroy them! How patently dissident they are [despite seeing irrefutable and obvious proofs].

And when it is said to them, “Come [to] RasulAllah [ so that he] may seek repentance for you” they turn their heads and you see that they evade arrogantly. [Holy Quran 63:1-5]


Answers to these questions on walaa and baraa will eventually define the character of any Sufi shaykh as a REAL Sufi or simply a munaafiq masquerading as an Ash’ari or Maturidi or Sufi scholar:

What is holy to the shaykh? 

Does he address christian, jewish, buddhist religious leaders as “your holiness”?

Remember Islam and kufr (and all kufr is one nation) are two opposites. If one is holy to him, the other is deemed to be unholy by him. If he addresses the pope as “you holiness” then it means our elders like Imam Ghazali or Imam Malik or Abu Hanifa and others are unholy to him. If he says both are holy, he’s a munaafiq trying to fool Muslims. Two opposites do not unite.

Who are the shaykh’s friends?

Do they include kafirs, and heads of their churches, temples, synagogues etc.?

Does the shaykh tell these heads of churches, temples, synagogues etc. to leave their religions and embrace Islam to save their hereafter?

Does the shaykh negate the trinity and the ‘son of god’ christian beliefs as profane, evil, and blasphemous – in front of the christians, to their face – and ask them to desist from it and become Muslim accepting Tawhiid and the Prophethood of our Master RasulAllah ﷺ?

The Quran does it in the MOST EXPLICIT & OPEN LANGUAGE. Our Master RasulAllah ﷺ ALWAYS negated the belief of trinity and the belief of ‘son of god’ as evil, profane, and blasphemous – in front of the christians, to their face – and asked them to accept Islam – also in THE MOST EXPLICIT LANGUAGE POSSIBLE.

ALL of his companions, and their followers, the TRUE Ash’ari, Maturidi and Sufi scholars too did the same. 

The reluctance of the modern day “shuyukh” to negate the trinity and their ‘son of god’ belief, the reluctance to ask them to desist from the trinity, the reluctance to ask them to leave christianity and become Muslim – is the MOST TELLING SIGN of the hypocrites of our times – coupled with their addressing the christian priests as “your holiness” or “his holiness”!

Does he negate their religions by the proofs of the sound mind and the proofs given by Islam?

If he doesn’t proselytize to them, what exactly is the aim of his relationships with them?

Remember, the hypocrites can always hide behind “adab” and “ihsan” but they simply can’t deny the fact that our Master RasulAllah ﷺ has the most perfect of “adab” and “akhlaq” and he NEVER ceased asking people to shun their false gods, and come to accept Islam – Allah’s Tawhiid and his messengership.

If his aim of being acquainted with them is to find solutions to issues of peaceful coexistence on this earth, then does the shaykh only discuss worldly issues at their worldly levels, or does he engage in “learning about and discussing their religions and traditions”

Does he proselytize to anyone at all? If not, why not?

If he says our good manners and characters speak for us, then we say to such a munaafiq that our Master RasulAllah’s ﷺ manners and character are the best, yet he directly called to Islam.

If and when the kuffar ask him about Islam, does he tell them directly that anyone who does not accept our Master RasulAllah ﷺ as Allah’s last & final messenger, is doomed to everlasting hellfire?

Is he shy to convey them of Allah’s promised torment for those who do not accept Islam?

Again, no one has more adab and akhlaq than our Master RasulAllah ﷺ, and he and his sahaba, and scholars always conveyed this to all people. 

Is he shy to call them kafirs to their face?

Is he even reluctant to call them kafirs in his gatherings among Muslims?

If the kafirs themselves ask him about who or what a kafir is, what answers does he give?

If the kafirs themselves ask him if according to Islam, they shall be saved in the hereafter or not, what does he say?

Is the word “kafir” taboo in his gatherings and study circles? Why?

Does he twist and add his own spins on religious discourses in order to appease his audience and say anything that people want to hear? (Only those who have the knowledge of the topic being spoken about, can discern this.)

Does the shaykh preach lovey dovey cuddly huggles type of friendships with kafirs?

Are the shaykh’s talks, lectures, articles conclusive or always open ended?

At the end of their talks, or reading their articles, can you summarize the conclusion in just one or two sentences?

If you can, what do those conclusions dictate?

Do those conclusions indicate a call to be subservient to kafirs, to appease them, to befriend them, to love them, etc.?

Do those conclusions ever indicate a call to uplift the pride and dignity of Islam and Muslims?

Do those conclusions ever indicate a call to maintain the Islamic walaa and baraa?

Do those conclusions ever indicate a call or a message that Muslims MUST NOT be friends, or have affinities or be forbearing towards the kuffar?

Do the conclusions of his speeches, talks, lectures, articles etc. aimed at kafir audiences always more or less amount to a message similar to: ‘Hey, your religion’s great for you! You don’t need to become Muslim to save your hereafter! You can continue doing what you’re doing!’?

Does the shaykh rush to accept invitations from the rich, famous, and powerful kafirs? This is a very detestable quality in Islam. Even those scholars who stand at the doors of Muslim rulers are reviled in the Islamic tradition in authentic ahadiith. 

Does the shaykh dare not say something contrary to the sensibilities of the rich, famous and powerful kafirs, or despotic rulers of Muslims?

Does the shaykh enjoy rubbing elbows with the rich, famous and powerful, be it kafirs or openly despotic Muslims?

Does he ever say anything as a matter of principles that is contrary to the sensibilities of the rich, famous, and the powerful, be it kafirs or openly despotic Muslims?

Or is he a “yes man” whose sole aim is to say “yes” to such people and ensure that he doesn’t rattle their feathers?

Does the shaykh crave power, fame, and limelight, just like hollywood stars or does he strive to seek oblivion and seclusion? 

Is the shaykh an audience pleaser and a crowd pleaser?

Is his aim in public gatherings to get the audience to cheer him on – much like a performer? 

Does the shaykh take principled stances with kafirs amounting to something like ‘That’s how this is. Too bad if you don’t like it’  – IN MATTERS ESTABLISHING THE PRIDE, DIGNITY & UPLIFTMENT OF ISLAM? The Prophet ﷺ, and the sahaba, and the scholars of Islam and TRUE Sufis ALWAYS did it!

Or does he only take principled stances with Muslims, amounting to ‘We have to serve and honor these kafirs and that’s it!’

Does the shaykh rush to wish them a merry christmas or hanukkah or easter etc.?

Does the shaykh ask Muslims to wish kafirs on their festivities or to celebrate and mark their festivities?

Does the shaykh rush to eulogize the kafir dead and sing their praises?

Does the shaykh preach by his words or actions that Muslims can pray for mercy for dead kafirs? It is kufr according to ALL FOUR madhhabs of Islam.

Does the shaykh always rush to [very rightly] condemn any wrong action by jahil khariji Muslims very directly and in the harshest of terms, yet he rarely condemns equally wrong and evil actions by the kuffaar?

When he does condemn something wrong done by the kuffar, is his condemnation equally as severe, direct, and harsh, or a mish mash of philosophical talks?

Example: IF a shaykh says ‘I condemn the al-Qaeda and its xyz operation in xyz country in the harshest possible terms’  DOES HE ALSO SAY SOMETHING LIKE ‘I condemn in the harshest possible terms the death and destruction unleashed on the innocent civilians of Iraq by the bush ‘n obama administrations. What is the difference between al-Qaeda’s bombing of 300 civilians in a night club and the american allies’ bombing of 3,000,000 innocent Iraqi citizens?’  OR DOES HE just talks about ‘I have grievances against western diplomacy’ and ‘The world is ruled by people who talk about human rights but do not honor it themselves.’ – only to make sure he doesn’t lose his public face with Muslims.

Are the shaykh’s actions, discourses, talks, speeches, calls to actions, etc. dictated by “what will the nonMuslims think of us” mindset?

Does the shaykh ask you to set a good example in front of kafirs, so that it can aid in da’wah – AND YET – never focus on, or do da’wah directly?

Da’wah is that which is done by our Master RasulAllah , his sahaba, their followers, the elders of the ummah, and ALL TRUE Sufis – asking kafirs to leave their religions and become Muslims accepting Allah’s Tawhiid and the messengership of our Master RasulAllah .

Is the shaykh everyone’s friend – even people of heretical sects, like the shiites, the wahabis and the perennialists? Note that perennialism is through and through kufr and hypocrisy and has nothing to do with Islam. 

Does the shaykh preach appeasement of every heretical sect or every religion? (Of course, he won’t directly use the word “appease” or instruct it in one sentence. He will give a message or a call promoting such things as a conclusion of a larger discourse.) 

Does the shaykh publicly distance himself from heretics and kafirs?

If yes, do his actions match up to his words? The hypocrite from california, for example, publicly says that he isn’t a perennialist, yet he writes obituaries for them, co-authors books with them, serves as an adviser to their publishing houses, etc. 

Enemies are of three types – 1) your own enemy 2) your friend’s enemy 3) your enemy’s friends

Does the shaykh distance himself from one enemy of Islam and Muslims, but sings praises of this enemy’s friends? An example, in the recent israeli offensive against gaza, if someone criticized israel, did he also criticize israel’s best friends and supporters like america and britian?

Does the shaykh profess or claim affinity to a group of Muslims, but also to their enemy? (Remember, your friend’s enemy is also your enemy.)

Are the shaykh’s lectures, discourses, talks, articles, etc. a saga of wishy washy political correctness gone mad?  

Does the shaykh get annoyed or angry when someone tells him something against kafirs, or tells him that Muslims should not befriend kafirs?

Does they shaykh get annoyed or angry when someone corrects him or advises him on a matter pertaining to walaa and baraa?


Some of the Quranic verses that define a Muslim’s walaa and baraa (among others)

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَتَّخِذُواْ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى أَوْلِيَاء بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاء بَعْضٍ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ لاَ يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Translation of meaning: O you who believe! Do not take the jews and christians as friends; they are friends of each other; and he who bears affinities to them from amongst you, then he is from them; indeed, Allah does not guide a transgressing people. [Holy Quran 5:51]

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَتَّخِذُواْ آبَاءكُمْ وَإِخْوَانَكُمْ أَوْلِيَاء إَنِ اسْتَحَبُّواْ الْكُفْرَ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ

Translation of meaning: O you who believe, do not consider your fathers and brothers as friends, if they love kufr over faith [i.e., Islam], and whoever amongst you bears affinities to them, he is the same transgressor. [Holy Quran 9:23]

قُلْ إِن كَانَ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَانُكُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَالٌ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَجِهَادٍ فِي سَبِيلِهِ فَتَرَبَّصُواْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ اللّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ وَاللّهُ لاَ يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ

Translation of meaning: Say, “If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your clansmen, and your wealth you earned, and those trades wherein you fear losses and those dwellings pleasing to you – are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and jihad in His cause, then watch out until Allah implements His command, and Allah guides not the open sinners. [Holy Quran 9:24]

مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ أَشِدَّاء عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاء بَيْنَهُمْ تَرَاهُمْ رُكَّعًا سُجَّدًا يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانًا سِيمَاهُمْ فِي وُجُوهِهِم مِّنْ أَثَرِ السُّجُودِ ذَلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِي الْإِنجِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَخْرَجَ شَطْأَهُ فَآزَرَهُ فَاسْتَغْلَظَ فَاسْتَوَى عَلَى سُوقِهِ يُعْجِبُ الزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَ وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ مِنْهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا

Translation of meaning: Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him, are hard against kuffaar, [but] compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) rida. On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Torah; and their similitude in the Injil: like a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem, (filling) the sowers with wonder and delight. As a result, it fills the kuffaar with rage at them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness, and a great reward.[Holy Quran 48:29]

لَّا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْإِيمَانَ وَأَيَّدَهُم بِرُوحٍ مِّنْهُ ۖ وَيُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ حِزْبُ اللَّهِ ۚ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

Translation of meaning: You shall not find those who believe in Allah and the last day – that they befriend those who have opposed Allah and His Messenger – even if, they are their fathers, or sons, or brothers, or clansmen; they are those on whose hearts Allah has stamped iman (faith) and helped them with a spirit from His commanding; and He shall admit them in gardens beneath which rivers flow, therein to abide for ever; Allah being radzi with them, and them being pleased with Allah; this is the party of Allah; verily, ONLY Allah’s party is victorious. [Holy Quran 58:22]

قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّىٰ تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ إِلَّا قَوْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَا أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِن شَيْءٍ ۖ رَّبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ

Translation of meaning: Indeed, an excellent example has been set up for you, in Ibraahiim and those with him [i.e., those who declared faith in Allah following Ibraahiim], when they declared to their people, “We are aloof from you and that you worship besides Allah, we reject you and there has appeared enmity and hatred/grudge between us and you until forever unless you believe in Allah, the one and only” except Ibraahiim’s saying to his father, “I shall indeed ask for forgiveness for you* and I am not the possessor [of any benefit] to you in front of Allah; our Lord! In You do we place our trust, and to You do we turn, and to You is our final return.” [Holy Quran 60:4]


Our Master RasulAllah ﷺ said:

لاَ تَقُولُوا لِلْمُنَافِقِ سَيِّدٌ، فَإنَّهُ إنْ يَكُ سَيِّداً فَقَدْ أسْخَطْتُمْ رَبَّكُمْ

Translation of meaning: Do NOT say to a hypocrite “master” for if he was [your] “master”, your Lord would have punished you. (Sahih chain)

Even though the kafir sufis pretending to be true Muslim scholar sufis are annoyed to quote it, our Master RasulAllah has said the following in a famous and graded hasan Hadiith. This below hadiith’s underlying principle is the CORNERSTONE OF TASAWWUF OF ALL REAL SUFIS:

أوثق عرى الإيمان الحب في الله، والبغض في الله – الطبراني

Translation of meaning: The MOST CEMENTED bond of faith is LOVE for Allah and HATE for Allah. (Tabaraniy)

Ibn Abi Shaybah narrates in his Musannaf:

بن عباس قال أحب في الله ووال في الله وعاد في الله فانما تنال ولاية بذلك لا يجد رجل طعم الايمان وإن كثرت صلاته وصيامه حتى يكون كذلك – مصنف ابن أبي شيبة

Ibn ‘Abbas  [RasulAllah’s ﷺ beloved cousin] said [whoever] loves for Allah’s sake, and befriends for Allah’s sake, and holds enmity for Allah’s sake, then indeed [he] would attain Allah’s friendship by this. A man can’t find the sweetness of faith even if he exceeds in prayers and fasting, unless he’s like this. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)


This is verse 9:73 of the Quran, one of the last few verses to be revealed:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ

Translation of meaning: O [beloved] Prophet! Launch jihad against the kafirs and the hypocrites and be tough with them. [Holy Quran 9:73 (and also 66:9)]

In Tafsiir Al-Baghawiy [1], it says under this verse says:

وقال عَطَاءٌ: نَسَخَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْعَفْوِ وَالصَّفْحِ

And ‘Ataa [2] said: This verse ABROGATES ALL THINGS [previously ordained] in terms of forgiveness and forbearance [towards the kuffar and munaafiqeen].

[1] – Please note that the exact same thing is also mentioned in Zaad Al-Masiir, Ruuh Al-Ma’aani, Jaami’ Al-Ahkam Al-Quran of Qurtubi, and many other books of tafsiir and ahkam al-Quran.

[2] – ‘Ataa [bin Abi Rabah] was one of the teachers of Imam Abu Hanifa, about whom Abu Hanifa said that he hasn’t seen a more pious and knowledgeable man than him.

It is true that during the Makkan period, when the hujjah, the proofs and evidences, for his call were in the midst of being established, Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ and believers to pardon and overlook UNTIL HIS COMMAND WOULD BE REVEALED. See for example verse 109 of Surah Baqarah

فَاعْفُوا وَاصْفَحُوا حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَ اللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ

Translation of meaning: … So forgive and forbear until Allah sends His command … [Holy Quran 2:109]

Allah’s further command as mentioned in that and similar verses of the Makkan period is revealed in this (9:73) and the other verses of war commanding zero clemency and forgiveness. All this forgiveness and forbearance and clemency to the kafirs is ABROGATED with this verse.

Dealing justly, evenhandedly and fairly, and basic human courteousness are required of all Muslims at all times in ALL dealings with anyone, Muslim or kafir, but courteousness and politeness do NOT extend to hypocrites and apostates.

However our FORGIVENESS and FORBEARANCE are ONLY for our brothers and sisters in Islam, and NOT for kafirs. This is the EXALTED CHARACTER & ADAB OF RASULALLAH ﷺ.

The munaafiqeen love to issue rulings based on abrogations. These kafirs will eventually bring forward the verse asking believers not to pray drunk, and try to establish that drinking is allowed at other times! May Allah damn their faces.


In Tafsiir Al-Baydzaawiy, it says under this verse (9:73) says:

وقال ابن عباس: أمره الله- تعالى- بجهاد المنافقين باللسان وأذهب الرفق عنهم

And Ibn ‘Abbas said: Allah Ta’ala COMMANDED him [the Beloved Prophet ﷺ] with jihad against the munaafiqeen by the tongue, and by CEASING all gentleness / courteousness / politeness towards them. 






– NO POLITENESS OR COURTEOUSNESS TO MUNAAFIQEEN, ZANAADIQ OR APOSTATES. They need to be rebuked very harshly at all times as they are the vilest of all life forms. Hypocrisy is such an evil that even those who disbelieve in Islam, are repelled by it. They must be completely shunned and boycotted by all Muslims. It is a crime against humanity to as much as smile politely to them. Even trade transactions with them are not permitted if a Muslim can avoid it. 



It may be possible that you may have been duped by the evil hypocrites pretending to be scholars of Islam. There are plenty of hypocrites born in Muslim families as there are hypocrites who are fake converts.

DO NOTE THIS: To TRULY convert to Islam, you HAVE TO convert your walaa and baraa according to Islam.

Your associations and affinities must be converted from being towards to kuffar towards Islam and Muslims.

Your disassociation and shunning of affinities and friendships must be converted away from Islam and Muslims and towards kufr and kuffaar.

THIS IS NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK: A good majority of the sahaba were also “converts”. Read their stories of how they left their former bondsmen, their wealths, and their homes and pledged allegiance to Allah and His Messenger and found everlasting blissful friendships and affinities with Muslims.

A convert to Islam isn’t guilty of violating a ruling of Islam that hasn’t reached him/her. If you have been misled by the hypocrites or ignoramuses pretending to be scholars of Islam, take solace from this verse, and ask Allah to safeguard your Muslim faith and identity from then on.

وَإِمَّا يُنسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَلاَ تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ

Translation of meaning: And if satan causes you to forget, then do not sit with the transgressors after you remember. (Holy Quran 6:68)

Right from our Master Rasulullah’s ﷺ times, until today, the world of Islam has seen real converts as well as phonies, the hypocrites. Our deen is naseeha, that is, sound advice. The aim of this particular advice is to make sure that our convert brothers and sisters understand full well this very important facet of real conversion, along with their usual efforts to advance further in Allah’s deen, may Allah reward their efforts.

It is not to sideline converts as opposed to born Muslims as some hypocrites, the munaafiqeen and zanaadiq (both born in Muslim homes, as well as fake converts) like to allege in order to cause a distraction and deviation from the real issue of walaa to Allah, His Messenger, Islam and Muslima; and baraa from disbelief and disbelievers. The sahaba were real converts who themselves many times identified the fakes in their midst. This issue of walaa and baraa and hypocrisy is as old as Islam itself.


Another bonus lesson for all Muslims from scarface’s anecdote – follow the money!

Ask yourselves these questions too in regards to anyone claiming to be a shaykh –

Where does this shaykh get his income from?

What does he do for a living?

Where does he get funding for his ventures from?

Can he sustain all his ventures with the income that he generates from whatever he does to make a living?

Who finances him?

Does the shaykh live in luxurious mansions, always fly first class, stays in presidential suites in luxury hotels?

Does he get funding from kafirs or heretics like the perennialists, the ismailis, the shiites, etc., from their institutes, universities, foundations, charities, rich ‘n famous elite, etc. for the work he does with / for them? (Such income and funding is patently haram in Islam, but that only matters to Muslims who have faith and a conscience!)

Will such funding or income cease to come his way if he were to take a principled stance based on Islam, like for example, taking a principled, uncompromising stance on Islam’s position on homosexuality?

… you get the drift.
